Elylu es una diseñadora gráfica, ilustradora y crafter (muy creativa!) que reside en Tijuana. Y désde allá nos ha mandado lindas palabras que inspiran; miren la entrevista que realizamos en Handmadesign y conozcanla ustedes mismos!

Me encanta que puedas fusionar la ilustración, el diseño gráfico y el craft. ¿Cómo llegaste a la decisión de que te gustaría trabajar en las 3 cosas, y no sólo una?

Creo que fue natural, nunca lo decidí, sólo integré todo lo que me gustaba sin pensarlo, como cuando jugaba de chiquita y quería llevar todo lo especial en una maletita, sin dejar nada fuera, todo lo escencial va contigo y ya depende de ti transformarlo.

¿Désde cuando haces Craft?

Desde que pude agarrar unas tijeras, jaja mi mamá es muy adicta a las manualidades, pero cuando yo decidí hacer mi propia versión fue hasta el 2007 que empecé a hacer regalitos para mi novio o mi familia, hacia monitos de fieltro, bufandas, gorritos, después salió la idea de ponerle nombre para establecerlo como hobby.

¿Qúe materiales son tus favoritos para la ilustración y el craft?

Son muchas, pero en la ilustración me quedo con el tracing paper, que es puritita magia y en el craft los fieltros de colores brillantes sobre todo los magentas o morados, también adoro la serigrafía y estampar mis telas.

Si tu vida fuera una película, ¿Cómo se llamaría?

Retomaría uno de los discos de los Beatles y una de las películas de Miyazaky (Kiki’s delivery service) para ponerle un título bastante largo:

“Magical Mistery Tour: El entrenamiento de una brujita llamada Elylu”

¿Qué música escuchas mientras trabajas?

Ahorita estoy escuchando mucho a Beirut, Helloseahorse, The Beatles, Sara Blasko, Carla Morrison, Pomplamoose y Lila Downs.

¿Qué te inspira?

Lo cursi, mi perrito Dientito (Diente de León), los colores, la naturaleza, la magia, ir al cine con mi novio, visitar a mi familia, viajar y caminar entre muchas cosas más.

Platicanos como es un día con Elylu:

Me gusta pensar que es como dice mi amigo Angel, “freaky cute”, si es día en que doy clases pues me preparo para salir, si no, puede que pase un buen rato metida en mi pequeño estudio decidiendome por donde empezar, coser, dibujar, pintar o hacer platitos de arcilla, son algunas cosas en las que estoy trabajando en estos días, pero si me decido no me detengo hasta que acabo así sean dos días, una semana o un mes, al final sólo verán un fantasma en pijama de colores con guantes, gorrito y bufanda. En un rato libre me gusta llevar a Diente al parque, más tarde encontramos a mi novio, cenamos, vemos el encantador de perros o una película.

Sé que comenzarás un proyecto nuevo (“Me gusta no me gusta”). Platicanos un poco de el y ¿Porqué se te ocurrió?

Ya tenía un rato queriendo hacer una lista de cosas que me gustan e ilustrarla, no sabia como aplicarla pero la idea llevaba un rato dando vueltas en mi cabeza y en mi sketch book, después escuche el cover que hizo Pomplamoose de “my favorite things”, una canción de la Novicia Rebelde, bueno era otra señal. Luego decidí invitar a personitas que les gustará la onda de la ilustración y tipografía ya que mi novio esta muy metido en eso y le propuse trabajar en equipo y hacer un fanzine, así podía entrar mas gente y habría variedad de gustos y estilos pero con un mismo camino. Estamos por lanzar el primer número, haremos la serigrafía de las portadas y queremos que resulten muchos números del fanzine, por el momento los participantes son invitados que ya conocemos de alguna manera, pero estamos encantados con la idea de conocer más talentos que quieran participar, así que nos pueden mandar un mail con el link a su sitio para postularse, buscamos, ilustración, tipografía y textos, poesía, etc. Tendremos temas para cada número y en base a eso son las colaboraciones. ¿Qué sientes de que tu trabajo inspira a mucha gente a crear?, Y que les podrías decir (pues todos ellos te leerán) :)

Me dan más ganas de seguir adelante, me hacen más soñadora y sin duda les diría una frase que leí en algún lugar y que se convirtió en mi mantra:

Sigue tus sueños, ellos saben el camino.(“Follow your dreams, they know the way”)

Y ya por último, ¿Qué tal está el movimiento Craft allá en B.C.? ¿Qué bazares hay? y ¿Siempre vendes en los bazares?

Hace dos años yo estaba en mi explosión craft y una amiga me invito a organizar el primer bazar oficialmente crafty, antes ya había algunas vendimias pero ahora ya era mas en serio, y fue increíble ver como se desató todo, ahora hay muchos bazares sobre todo en esta temporada, incluso el Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT o mejor conocido como la bola), organizo lo que por 3 o 4 meses fueron los Domingos de Diseño Independiente, y fue de gran ayuda para el pequeño mundo del craft, aunque no duró mucho, pero eventos no faltan. Yo participo esporádicamente de algunos, porque durante este tiempo estuve muy enfocada en acabar dos cuentos escritos e ilustrados por mi, en busca de becas y oportunidades con editoriales, así que estoy en los eventos de temporada como navidad o San Valentín, pero el ambiente siempre es muy padre, hay muchas personas talentosas, que hacen de todo y existe mucha aceptación de la gente que asiste a comprar, si nos va muy bien, de hecho de ahí me surgió la oportunidad de vender mis monitos en una galería en Ensenada, y fueron un éxito que me trajo pedidos especiales, entonces ahora cubro esos pedidos y vendo en la galería y otras tienditas.

I love that you can merge the illustration, graphic design and craft. How did you come to the decision that you want to work on 3 things, not just one?

I think it was natural, I never decided, just integrate everything I liked without thinking, as when she played little and wanted to take everything that is special in a suitcase, leaving nothing out, everything is essential and depends on you and transform you .

When did you decide to make Craft?

Since I could hold scissors, lol my mom is addicted to the craft so we sat at my sisters and me with special projects for Christmas or that if not more, but then when I decided to make my own version was in 2007 I started making gifts for my boyfriend or my family, to monkeys felt, scarves, hats, then came the idea of naming to establish it as a hobby.

What are your favorite tools for illustration and craft?

There are many, but to say a figure I think I’ll stick with the tracing paper, which is puritita magic and craft felts particularly bright magenta or purple, I also love the screen and print my fabrics.

If your life were a movie, how can it be called?

Resume one of the Beatles records and one of the movies Miyazaky (Kiki’s delivery service) to put a rather long title:

“Magical Mystery Tour: The training of a witch called Elylu”

What music do you listen while you work?

Right now I’m listening to Beirut, Helloseahorse, The Beatles, Sarah Blasko, Carla Morrison, Pomplamoose and Lila Downs. But everything depends on the weather and my mood, I like everything, but when work needs to be lighter and singable haha, I do not like it too loud or heavy, I feel that I get upset.

What inspires you?

Kitsch, my dog little teeth (Dandelion), colors, nature, magic, go to the movies with my boyfriend, to visit my family, traveling and walking among many other things.

Tell us how a day with Elylu:

I like to think of it as my friend Angel, “freaky cute”, and a basic count for little teeth wake jumps to my bed so I got up to play and after a while the belly sobarle give him food and water for me spend time in front of the computer, news updates in my email and answering some, blogging daily dose, if I teach day as I prepare to leave, breakfast and the whole thing, otherwise it may take a good time in my little studio tucked decide where to start, sew, draw, paint or make clay bowls are some things I’m working on these days, but if I decide I will not stop until I well be two days a week or a month at the end only see a ghost in colored pajamas with gloves, hat and scarf. In my spare time I like to take the park Tooth large as 4 blocks from our “depalu” to walk and sniff to his friends, later found my boyfriend dinner, we see the lovely dogs and a movie, if there is something interesting in the film as we go and buy things with chili and lemon haha. On weekends I visit my family who live about 45 minutes from me and little teeth Spock visit my sister’s puppy.

I know I’ll start a new project (“I like it I do not like.”) Tell us a bit of it and Why did you come?

Already had a time trying to make a list of things I like and illustrate it, did not know how to apply but the idea took a while going around in my head and in my sketch book, then listen to the cover that made Pomplamoose of “my favorite things” , a song from the Sound of Music, was another good sign. Then I decided to invite the little people will like the wave of illustration and typography since my boyfriend is really into it and I proposed to work together and do a fanzine, and could get more people and have variety of tastes and styles but with a same way. We are about to launch the first issue, the silkscreen do covers and we want to prove many fanzine numbers for the time participants are encouraged that we already know in some way, but we are delighted with the idea of learning more talents who want to participate, so we can send an email with a link to your site to run, seek, illustration, typography and text, poetry, etc. We will have themes for each issue and on that basis are collaborations. How do you feel that your work inspires many people to create?, And they might say (as you read them all):)

I feel more like moving on, I become more dreamy and certainly I would say a phrase I read somewhere and that became my mantra:

Follow your dreams, they know the way. (“Follow your dreams, They know the way”)

And finally, What is Craft movement there in BC? What bazaars are there? and you always sell in the bazaars?

Two years ago I was in my craft explosion and a friend invited me to organize the first official crafty bazaar before had some vintages but now was more seriously.

And it was amazing to see how everything was unleashed, there are now many bazaars especially in this season, including the Centro Cultural Tijuana (Tijuana Cultural Center or better known as the ball), which organized for 3 or 4 months were the Sunday Independent Design and was of great help to the small world of craft, but not last, but events are not lacking. I partake occasionally of some, because during this time I was very focused on finishing two tales written and illustrated by myself, in search of scholarships and opportunities with publishers, so I’m on seasonal events such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day, but the atmosphere always is really cool, there are many talented people that do everything and there is much acceptance of the people attending to buy, if everything goes well, in fact there I got the opportunity to sell my monkey at a gallery in Ensenada, and were a success that brought me special orders, so now I cover these orders and sell in the gallery and other small shops.

I went onto elylu’s blog and etsy, and i have to say she is funny! I really like her things. They are all very inventive and fun….they have that childlike quality that makes it adorable. I especially love her happy drop and eco-bunnies!
